Breathing New Life into Knebworth House: Witton Fell Stone at the Heart of a Sensitive Restoration
As part of the ongoing restoration of the historic Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, our exclusive Witton Fell sandstone was selected for a highly sensitive and prestigious conservation project. The work involved the creation of a series of finely carved stone beasts alongside three new herbal bosses, all designed to sit comfortably within the architectural language of the house while renewing elements that had weathered over time.

A stone chosen for beauty, strength and sympathy
The choice of our Witton Fell stone was central to the success of the project. Renowned for its durability and subtle character, it was considered a sympathetic British stone that would blend naturally with the existing fabric of the building. Beyond its visual compatibility, the stone offered practical advantages: its strength promised increased longevity, and, perhaps surprisingly, it also delivered a cost saving without compromising on quality or craftsmanship.
Celebrating craft that honours history
This thoughtful approach to material selection and traditional stone carving did not go unnoticed. The project was recognised by the judges at the National Stone Awards, who praised both the sensitivity of the work and the appropriateness of the chosen stone. In recognition of these qualities, the project received a Commended award at the National Stone Awards in 2016, highlighting it as an exemplary piece of heritage restoration that balanced historic integrity with modern conservation principles.
