Enduring Stories in Stone: Bespoke Sculptures, Dunbar and Musselburgh, Scotland

Bespoke sculptures demonstrate how carefully chosen stone and thoughtful design can bring stories, people, and places to life. The Creel Loaders and the Rough Wooing Memorial were designed and created by sculptor Gardner Molloy using our exclusive Witton Fell sandstone, a material valued for its strength, character, and timeless quality.

The Creel Loaders, situated at the approach to Dunbar Harbour, is a moving tribute to women’s hard work and endurance. The sculpture acknowledges the vital but often under‑recognised role women played in supporting coastal communities, capturing a sense of physical effort, resilience, and shared endeavour.

In Musselburgh, the Rough Wooing Memorial commemorates the Scots’ defeat at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547. Thoughtfully executed, the memorial provides a lasting marker of this significant moment in Scottish history, inviting reflection while ensuring the story is preserved for future generations.

Together, these works demonstrate how bespoke sculpture can preserve memory, celebrate heritage, and bring stories to life through carefully chosen material and design.
