McEwan Hall, Edinburgh
Material Continuity in a Category A Landmark: McEwan’s Hall, Edinburgh

National Significance and Architectural Presence

McEwan’s Hall is one of Edinburgh’s most striking historic buildings, celebrated for its richly decorated architecture and commanding presence. Designated as a Category A listed property, it is widely recognised as being of national importance and is often described as a true flagship building within the city’s architectural landscape.

Restoring with the Right Stone: Witton Fell

When undertaking work on such an iconic structure, sensitivity to the original materials was paramount. Our exclusive Witton Fell sandstone proved to be an exceptional match for the building’s original Polmaise stone, allowing the façade to be restored with authenticity and respect for its historic character. The close visual and geological resemblance ensured that the new stonework blended seamlessly with the existing fabric, preserving the integrity and grandeur of the hall.

Recognition for Craftsmanship

The quality of craftsmanship delivered on this project did not go unnoticed. In recognition of the meticulous attention to detail and the high standard of stonework achieved, the project was awarded a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade at the Stone Federation Awards 2016. This commendation reflects not only the technical skill involved, but also a shared commitment to safeguarding an important piece of Scotland’s architectural heritage for generations to come.
