Standing proudly at the heart of Queen’s University Belfast, the Lynn Building is one of the city’s most distinguished historic landmarks. Constructed between 1866 and 1868, the building is Grade B listed and widely recognised as one of the finest surviving examples of Ruskinian Victorian Gothic architecture in Belfast. Its striking stonework, intricate detailing and strong sense of craftsmanship reflect the confidence and ambition of the era in which it was built.
Restoring beauty without losing character
Our involvement in this significant restoration project involved the supply of stone for both interior and exterior works, requiring a careful balance between conservation and renewal. Over time, natural weathering had taken its toll on portions of the masonry, and the project called for the sensitive replacement and indenting of stone to ensure the building’s long‑term stability while remaining true to its original character. Every intervention was carried out with respect for the historic fabric, using traditional techniques and materials where possible.

The success of the project lay in this attention to detail, ensuring that new work blended seamlessly with the old, preserving the architectural integrity of the building for future generations.

The quality and craftsmanship achieved were formally recognised when the project received a ‘Commended’ award at the National Stone Awards 2016. This acknowledgement reflects not only the importance of the Lynn Building itself, but also the skill, care and collaboration involved in safeguarding one of Belfast’s architectural treasures.
