Stone Carving
The intriguing Forbidden Corner was built at
Tupgill Park in Coverdale in the early 1990s as a private
folly and pleasure garden for the estate's owners. Now open
to an appreciative public, this magical place is so popular
that entrance is restricted to pre-booked ticket.
Sandstone gargoyles cast watchful eyes over summer visitors
from their high vantage point on the round tower. Their personas
are inspired by traditional decorative architecture and their
carving celebrates centuries of the stonemason's art, his
skills handed down craftsman to craftsman through the centuries.
Embodying the humour and whimsy which have inspired the Forbidden
Corner project, subtle local references are included - the
ram is the symbol of Masham's Black Sheep Brewery, hence the
carved pun 'one black sheep two many'.
