Repair & Renovation
 Extensive repairs to the faηade of St. Hilda's Church, South Shields, involved a completely replaced sandstone doorway and string course, renewed circular window plus some surrounding stonework and selective replacement of stones to the tower. Intensive work was needed at the top of the tower where the erosion was greatest, to restore the arched string course around the clock as well as the stonework above.
The key to this type of renovation project is careful measurement, stone by replacement stone, and an in-depth knowledge of the weathering properties of stone types to ensure correct matching so that, over the course of time, the new stonework will perfectly match the original in colour and texture.
Our photographs are all taken soon after completion so that the extent of replacement work can clearly be seen. Once weathered in, the new inserts will be virtually indistinguishable from the old stones, other than, perhaps, by their better condition.
